I was once asked, “What is best; to do the right thing, or to do what is right?” I was then asked if they were the same thing?
Some would argue that both questions are synonymous. But when you take a moment to think about it, it is clear that there’s a difference in conceptual understanding. More so, Islam points out the differences within both questions.
Enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong [3:104].
(Arabic: الأمر بالمَعْرُوف والنَهي عن المُنْكَر, romanized: al-amr bi-l-maʿrūf wa-n-nahy ʿani-l-munkar), “you enjoin what is right and forbid what is reprehensible”, are two important Islamic requisites, from the Quran, and both are considered positive dictates which helps people to choose good deeds over bad ones and encourages them to abstain from reprehensible acts.
This expression is the base of the Islamic institution of hisbah. It forms a central part of the Islamic doctrine for all Muslims.
